The idea behind geography work in Montessori is to follow each child individually, supplying him or her with the information they are searching for. The aim is to teach the child about the society in which he lives and others around the world, to make children feel that they are part of the wider community.
Studying different continents and learning different languages helps the child have an open mind and can lead to peaceful coexistence between cultures. In the 4 year old classes, 4A and 4B with Carolina and 4C with Naz, the children have begun to discover the world, identify the continents, understand the concept of maps and where they fit in geographically in their world, all in English.
This leads smoothly into our next project which will be about Madrid as the town we live in, and how we organise ourselves as communities.
